University Entrance Exams in Turkey: A Guide for International Students

For international students wishing to pursue a university education in Turkey, the application and admission processes can differ from the centralized exam system used for local students. However, some universities also use their own exams or other internationally recognized tests for the admission of foreign students. Therefore, it is important to carefully review the specific requirements of the university you plan to apply to.

1. Foreign Student Exam (YÖS)

YÖS is an exam organized by some public universities in Turkey for the admission of students from abroad. Each university can conduct its own YÖS, so the date, content, and application conditions of the exam vary from one university to another.

• Content: It generally consists of questions on basic mathematics, logic, and geometry. Turkish language proficiency is not a prerequisite, but the exam questions are usually provided in both Turkish and English.
• Usage: The YÖS score is only valid for the quotas of the respective university. A YÖS score from one university cannot be used to apply to another.

2. High School Diploma and International Exams

When admitting international students, many universities may prioritize a student’s high school diploma GPA or results from internationally recognized exams instead of their own YÖS. These exams typically include:

• SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test): Although it is a US-based exam, it is accepted by many Turkish universities. It consists of two sections: Math and English (Evidence-Based Reading and Writing).
• ACT (American College Testing): Also a US-based exam, it includes sections on English, Math, Reading, and Science.
• IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma: This is an international high school diploma program and is frequently accepted by universities in Turkey.
• Other National High School Exit Exams: High school exit exams taken in the student’s own country (for example, the Abitur in Germany or the Baccalauréat in France) may also be accepted by some universities.

3. Language Proficiency

If you are applying to a program taught in Turkish, you may need to prove your Turkish proficiency. This is usually done through a Turkish Proficiency Exam (TÖMER) organized by the universities themselves, or a similar test. Students who do not achieve a sufficient score are generally offered the opportunity to learn Turkish in a preparatory class for one year. If you are applying to a program taught in English or another language, you will be asked to submit a score from an internationally recognized language exam such as TOEFL or IELTS.
